Dunaliella salina cultivation process is carried out in shallow raceway ponds of size up to a production surface area of approximately 3000 m2 and having a depth of about 25 cm.
The site of the production facility should have long, hot, dry summer and is situated at or near a suitable source of brines. The location should also be remote from possible pollution produced by industrial or agricultural activities (i.e., pesticides or heavy metals) as the final product produced will be used in human food.
The land should be fairly flat to minimize pond construction costs. Raceways require complete ground sealing and could be sited on sealed, disused, industrial brownfield sites instead of agricultural land
