Dunaliella salina - An Overview

Dunaliella salina is a green, halophilic microalgae growing in sea salt fields or hypersaline environments. These algae cells lack rigid cell wall and have a thin elastic plasma membrane. The alga is known for its antioxidant activity because of its ability to produce high amounts of carotenoids – mainly beta carotene.

The high content of beta carotene makes Dunaliella attractive to biotechnologists for large-scale production in high-salinity, shallow, open ponds under high solar radiation.
